Venous thromboembolism (VTE) and its associated problems cover all areas of medical practice and place a large economic and health burden on the community. Amongst the challenges is the recognition that VTE is an increasing problem in non-surgical patients and more vigilance must to be given these other groups of patients and their potential needs for thromboprophylaxis.

This module focuses on:
  • Risk assessment for VTE
  • Diagnosis and management of venous thrombosis and embolism
  • Role of the newer agents (thrombin inhibitors) in the prevention and treatment of VTE
This case starts with the epidemiology of VTE and risk assessment.
