Hand trauma is one of the most common presentations to the emergency department (4% of Royal Adelaide Hospital ED presentations in 2011/12), and make up a significant proportion of the surgical cases for both Plastic and Orthopaedic Surgeons. The flexor and extensor tendons are pivotal to hand function, but are unfortunately relatively superficial. This means that they are often damaged with lacerations and crush injuries involving the hand. These injuries can be diagnosed clinically, so your approach to the patient is critical.
