Over 1.2 million people die on the roads every year and 20 - 50 million suffer life-threatening injuries, many being left with permanent disabilities.  Apart from the personal tragedy, road trauma has an annual cost exceeding US$518 billion, costing countries 1 - 3% of their gross national product.
