Failure to thrive (FTT) describes a problem, rather than a diagnosis. It specifically describes situations in which a person does not gain weight appropriately. This can be a result of a medical problem, psychosocial stressors, or a combination of both.

This case study is in two parts. Part I deals with the initial assessment, in terms of the history, physical examination and assessment of how the findings match up what is expected of an otherwise healthy individual of similar age. The second part of the case study deals with some of the management strategies that need to be considered in such cases.
