This case will teach the student about the main causes of pericarditis and give them a framework for history-taking in the patient with suspected acute pericarditis. The student will learn about the diagnostic criteria for acute pericarditis and will learn how to decide whether to hospitalise a patient or not. Treatment for an uncomplicated case of pericarditis will be explained. The student will also learn about pericardial effusions and how they can progress to cardiac tamponade.
