A 58-year-old man with difficulty in swallowing

Peter Devitt
Head, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Unit
Royal Adelaide Hospital

For reasons that are not entirely clear the incidence of carcinoma of the oesophagus has shown a dramatic increase in western populations over the last two decades. By the time that most patients present the disease is well advanced and the treatment offered is palliative. The overall 5-year survival rate is about 20% and nearly 90% of the patients will die of their disease.

This case focuses on the epidemiology of the disease.
