Meet Dr. Alexander Howes – your guide to navigating the full breadth of paediatrics! Alexander is a paediatric emergency physician who holds a fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, as well as an Associate Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (AFRACMA).

Few specialties demand the breadth that paediatric emergency medicine does – on any given shift, Alexander might manage anything from neonatal sepsis to adolescent mental health presentations, fractures to febrile seizures, asthma to abdominal emergencies. This constant exposure to the full spectrum of paediatric presentations has given him a genuinely broad clinical knowledge base that extends well beyond emergency medicine into general paediatrics as a whole.

Based at the Women's & Children's Hospital in Adelaide, Alexander works as a consultant in the emergency department, where his background in medical administration underpins his deep involvement in service redesign, quality improvement and workforce development alongside his clinical work. He's also a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide, regularly teaching registrars and medical students and building teaching material – including exam-style questions – to help trainees translate theory into confident clinical decision-making.

Alexander joined eMedici because he believes exam preparation should mirror real clinical reasoning, not just rote recall. With a strong grounding in critical appraisal, statistics and health economics, he brings a first-principles, evidence-based approach to how he teaches – helping students understand why the guidelines say what they say, not just what they say.

Alexander develops and reviews paediatric exam questions for eMedici, drawing on his broad clinical experience across the full range of paediatric presentations – and his systems-level view of how EDs actually operate – to make sure every question reflects how experienced clinicians actually think under pressure.

Roger is keen to help you ace your RACP Paediatrics exams! After graduating from medical school at the University of Adelaide in 2019 where he was co-convenor of the Adelaide Medical Student Society's Teaching Series, he chose to move to Darwin to complete his internship and residency at the Royal Darwin Hospital. After discovering a passion for paediatric medicine working with the RDH paediatric unit, he completed the Sydney Child Health Program and then moved to Sydney to complete his Basic Physician Training at the Children's Hospital at Westmead.

After successfully completing his RACP exams in 2024, he then took a break from clinical work to complete a Master's of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at James Cook University and a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

In addition to General Paediatrics, he has an interest in Paediatric Oncology and Infectious Diseases and from 2027 he will be one of the Paediatric Oncology Fellows at the Children's Hospital at Westmead.

Outside of work he is a passionate hiker, having completed the 4,250 km Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada in 2025.

Shilsha is a Paediatric Registrar currently undertaking Advanced Training in General Paediatrics and Community Child Health in Adelaide. She has had a passion for teaching since medical school that has grown and developed throughout her medical career. She has been involved with eMedici as a peer reviewer since 2022 and has been a Paediatric Discipline Editor since 2025.

Having experienced first-hand the stress and challenges of preparing for medical exams, particularly the Basic Physician Training exams, Shilsha is passionate about helping create high-quality, accessible resources that make exam preparation more manageable and less daunting. She enjoys supporting other doctors through their learning journey and hopes to make studying a little easier (and maybe even a bit of fun) along the way.
