How to Enrol
Enrolment windows are short and RACGP doesn’t accept late enrolments, so it pays to plan ahead.
Check your eligibility early. Eligibility depends on your training pathway, and some pathways need an assessment application submitted months before enrolment opens. RACGP lists these deadlines alongside the exam dates.
Enrol within the enrolment window. Enrolment opens at 9am and closes at 11:59pm (Australian Eastern Time) on the dates above.
Pay the exam fee. Fees are paid by credit card when you enrol. If you’re experiencing financial hardship, contact RACGP before enrolment closes.
Apply for special arrangements if you need them. Applications are due by the close of enrolment.
Choose your venue. For the AKT and KFP, you’ll select a preferred venue when you enrol.
How to Prepare
There’s no single right way to prepare, but steady, regular practice usually works better than cramming, especially while you’re working full-time.
Start early. Start gently 6–12 months before your exams. Focus on covering the content properly rather than counting study hours.
Set specific, realistic goals. “Complete 20 KFP questions” or “review antenatal screening” works better than vaguely “studying GP”. Plan around what you can actually do, like 10 AKT questions between patients or a focused hour once the house is quiet. Getting Into the Groove of GP Registrar Life has more on fitting study around work and family.
Learn from every clinic. After each clinic day, ask what you struggled with or felt unsure about, and review one topic. In case discussions with your supervisor, practise structuring management plans the way you would answer a KFP question.
Do every college practice exam. The AKT, KFP and CCE practice exams are some of the highest-yield resources there are. The RACGP curriculum unit resource lists are also worth working through.
Practise under real exam conditions. Practise to time, with interruptions and unfamiliar cases. Timing won’t suddenly feel easier on exam day.
For the CCE, use a framework and get feedback. A consistent consultation framework keeps you organised, especially in reading time. Practise with supervisors, recently fellowed GPs or other registrars, and go to the college workshops. GP Exam Prep: What Actually Helps includes a full consultation framework.
eMedici is built for GP registrar life, with exam prep you can fit in between consults:
GP AKT/KFP has 2,800+ AKT questions and 330+ KFP questions with detailed explanations, plus blueprinted AKT and KFP mock exams with cohort performance data. Everything is reviewed by GP specialists.
GPRA Clinical Cases has 40 case discussions and 63 simulated consultations with detailed marking sheets, so you can practise for the CCE on your own, with a study group, or with your supervisor.
Our free GP AKT/KFP exam prep webinar covers exam strategy and includes live practice questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pass the AKT and KFP before the CCE?
Yes. You must pass both the AKT and KFP before you can sit the CCE. You can still enrol in all 3 exams in the same cycle, and you can enrol in the CCE while you’re waiting on your AKT or KFP results. If you don’t pass, you’ll be automatically withdrawn from the CCE and receive a full refund.
How many attempts do I get?
You have 6 enrolments over 3 years to pass all 3 exams, not counting approved leave. If you don’t pass within these limits, you won’t be eligible for FRACGP.
How are results reported, and is the pass mark published?
You receive a Pass or Fail result with a score band from F4 (lowest) to P4 (highest). RACGP doesn’t publish pass marks or provide individual scores. Results are available by logging in to the RACGP website on the publication date.
What do I need to bring to the AKT and KFP?
You’ll need a current, original photo ID. RACGP supplies the black ballpoint pens you must use, and you shade your answers on a bubble answer sheet.
